About the 2018 Keynote Presentation

Preconditions for Learning: Infrastructure for Student Success

What would you offer students if you had an hour to share three things that would set them on a path toward academic success? I hope you’d supply more than the typical edu-babble we often provide – study three hours for every hour of class time. Don’t miss class. Sit in the front of class. This keynote outlines practical steps you can take to build a solid infrastructure for students thrive in school.

Keynote participants will be able to
  • identify the three types of academic vision that power student learning,
  • identify the six transition traps that ensnare learners, and
  • instill a robust framework for academic work.

About the 2018 Keynote Workshop

Preconditions for Learning: Establishing the Proper Infrastructure for Student Success

Have you ever wondered why rigorous academic work stimulates some students and frustrates others? It seems the academic deck is stacked in favor of some students and against others. Research suggests that successful students operate from academic infrastructures different from those of their peers. The structures of thriving students enable them to handle the high volumes of information and cognitive challenges that colleges demand. This workshop shares the critical dispositional and cognitive benefactors that facilitate rewarding learning and equips participants to establish the proper preconditions for academic success.

Workshop participants will be able to
  • establish the proper preconditions for learning;
  • use metacognitive tools to optimize student thinking, learning and performance; and
  • use research to reconceptualize student work and challenge higher learning programs to meet new performance metrics for the upcoming academic year.
